Where I've Been - Anne Hathaway

THE HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS ON HER ROMANTIC TRAVELS IN EUROPE

“A NICE LITTLE VACATION SHOULD involve a lot of walks through the woods or on the beach, or just a lot of time to sit and chill – and it should have a lot of possibilities for romance, of course.

“My best vacation was last summer, when I travelled through Europe by myself and met up with friends in different cities, and just took pictures and wrote in my journal, and saw great pieces of art and architecture.

“I was at this Miró exhibition in Madrid and it was beautiful. Miró once said how happy he was to have a studio in which he could do so many different types of work. He said: ‘I come and I look at it like it’s my garden’. I thought, you know, that is very much the approach to my career. Certainly, I have a lot more success with some genres than others, but how wonderful so far that I am so young and I’m able to have diversity in my career. That’s so wonderful. I’m very grateful.

“I’ve been to Paris. You can’t beat Paris.

But I was very, very lazy and didn’t make it to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I’ve been to the Louvre and so forth. I really liked just walking around through neighbourhoods and getting lost and trying to figure out how to get back to my hotel. I thought Bastille Day was 4 July [it’s actually 14 July]. So I kept saying ‘Happy Bastille Day!’. No wonder people looked at me like I was crazy in Paris. I went out to dinner a lot and one of my favourite places was Café de Flore. I know that’s very American of me, but they have the best hot chocolate in the world.

“While filming Ella Enchanted, I lived in Dublin, or Ballsbridge really, and we also shot in Bray in County Wicklow. I had such a great time. I loved living there, I loved the people, and surprisingly enough the weather as well. We shot outdoors for six weeks and it didn’t rain once.

“I did it around the same time as my friends were doing their junior [university] year abroad, so in my way it felt like my year of international travels. If I wasn’t an actor I would be in Europe right now travelling around, bumming rides off people and just being a little dare-devil romantic person.”
