Captain: Jack Bagnall, Dublin
“People often ask me what it’s like fl ying an aeroplane, but the one
question I get asked the most is to name my favourite destination.
I’ve fl own for Ryanair for a few years now and seen the route network
expand at a spectacular rate. But having being born and bred in Dublin,
fl ying there is still top of my list.
The airport is situated at the north-east corner of the city, and not that long ago it was surrounded by green fi elds. Now it’s almost like a downtown airport. My favourite time for arriving back home is just before sunset on a spring evening, when the air is still clear, the visibility good, and the sea so smooth that the setting sun refl ects out across Dublin bay towards Wales. As we descend, it’s easy to pick out particular features, such as the newly erected spire on O’Connell Street, which is 120m high. Most of the Dublin pilots can spot their own homes and even their local pub. And what a spectacular view as we approach the coast! You’d be forgiven for thinking all we do in Dublin is play golf, as we fl y over eight courses between the coastline and the airport, and it’s only a distance of about six miles.”
