AUGUST
MALAGA
If you’re after a tan and want more than a beach from your holiday, this southern Spanish city is the place to be in August. Show up during the Malaga Summer Fair and catch 10 fantastic days of partying, with a week-long display of fl amenco, fun and fi no. Think horse parades, all-day openings at the museums, night-time fi estas and the chance to gorge yourself silly on the local wine and cuisine. It all dates back to the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand in 1487, and is classic Spain at its most lively and best. Plus, because you’re in Malaga, you can zip off to the Costa del Sol when the inevitable lure of the sea becomes too much.

SEPTEMBER
MILAN
Twice a year madness descends on Italy’s second-largest city in the guise of fashion week, in which strange people from across the planet turn up to convince us that their plastic-and-sandpaper clothes are what the rest of us will be wearing next year. Blag your way into any of the events and you’re in for a treat, because a fashion show these days can cost millions to put on and will feature some of the world’s hottest models. The parties are like nothing else all year and you’ll fi nd it impossible to resist some clothes shopping of your own in and around Via Montenapoleone. Italy’s capital of style will leave you breathless and penniless in equal measure.

OCTOBER
PRAGUE
Beautiful word, beautiful city, and simply irresistible to anyone who likes their holidays infused with culture, a fi re-side beer and some truly memorable sights. Visit the Czech capital in October and not only will you dodge the summer and Christmas throngs, you can also enjoy one of the best autumn fairs in Europe. Prague Autumn has been gaining a reputation for attracting the world’s great musicians and ensembles since the early 1990s. A favourite – if untypical – landmark and the best place from which to survey the city is the jaw-dropping 216m-high Prague TV tower, which looks like a space rocket and is bedecked with models of babies crawling up its side. Well worth a peep.

NOVEMBER
VIENNA
Countless cities vie for the title of “world’s best Christmas market”, but none seem to do them better than the festive folk behind the one in the Austrian capital. From the middle of November you can get into the Christmassy vibe in a way your local shopping mall could only dream of at the Christkindlmarkt, on the square in front of the magnifi cent Town Hall. If you can’t fi nd grandma a gift here, you won’t fi nd her one anywhere, but just being there at all is half the fun – it’s like everything you dreamed Christmas could be when you were a nipper. Dating back an astonishing 700 years, the Christkindlmarkt attracts millions of visitors because it is, quite simply, magical.

DECEMBER
OSLO
The Norwegian capital is a cracking wintry spot, and one of the few city breaks you can combine with a little skiing. Not particularly large but blessed with museums and galleries and retaining much of its medieval layout, Oslo is also pleasantly green – making wintry walks wrapped up in a big coat the stuff that memories are made of. For academic enlightenment, visit the Nobel Peace Centre, to see why the prize’s history-shaping winners are actually quite cool. And to get to the slopes, you’re just a 30-minute train ride away. All this, and you’re also on the doorstep of mountains, fjords and some of the most spectacular winter scenery in Europe. Unmissable.
