6 spots best avoided if you’re a veggie

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA
COUNT DRACULA CLUB
The Count Dracula Club in Bucharest is a restaurant where blood and gore go hand and hand with the food, and if you just fancy some pasta and a sparkling white, it’s probably not for you. That said, they do have one vegetarian dish, a beetroot salad — the purple veg specially chosen as “it’s the closest thing to blood”.

LONDON, UK
ST JOHN BAR & RESTAURANT
Fergus Henderson has won awards for the food at his cool eatery around the corner from Smithfield meat market, but his cuts can be a little off-putting, even for carnivores. Here you can sample ox tongue, pig’s head and bone marrow.

PARIS, FRANCE
LE TAXI JAUNE
Animal lovers tend to have a fondness for horses, so this place is not going to be to their liking at all. The restaurant is unpretentious – pleasantly boho, even – but the menu features horse by the bucketload, Neddy being a speciality.

LYON, FRANCE
PAUL BOCUSE
At chef Paul Bocuse’s main restaurant in Lyon, the “Gastronomic Capital of France”, vegetarian diners will no doubt reel when waiters fillet cuts of lamb and veal table-side. If you ordered it “bleu”, it could be like the shower scene in Psycho.

MADRID, SPAIN
THE MUSEUM OF HAM
Not a museum as such, more of a cured-meat-obsessed chain of butchers in the city centre. Stop here for a coffee by accident and you’d do well not to look up, as pork leg after pork leg hang from the ceiling, and in some cases even the stairs.

FLORENCE, ITALY
TRATTORIA SOSTANZA
Said to be Florence’s oldest trattoria, this blood-happy gem has been going since 1869. Nicknamed “the trough” for its communal tables, people flock here for its 8cm-thick steaks, cut with the kind of knife that would make a hunter giddy. The squeamish may also not enjoy the restaurant at nearby Fortezza Medicea in Volterra – it’s a prison, and that bloke playing the piano is a murderer.
