Citylives Marseille
Marine Peyre, Designer/Owner Of Cooked In Marseille Design Studio

Artist and Marseille resident Marine shows us the city’s creative side
“I was born in Marseille and I guess you could say that I am a ‘real Marseille girl’. Apart from four months spent studying in London, this has always been my home and I would not have it any other way.

“People are always comparing Marseille to Paris, but the towns are far more different than they are similar. In Paris, people are straight and formal with quite fixed minds, but here we are full of free spirit and our minds are definitely more open. I think it is true that we in Marseille are French second and Marseillais first.

“In some ways, Marseille has more in common with London than Paris, in that it is not really one big city at all, but a collection of ‘villages’, each with their own identity and atmosphere. What each village shares is a love of the sea – the most integral aspect of our lives here, as we interact with it all the time – and also an appreciation of life itself.

“The most famous district is the Vieux Port and, although it is the heart of the tourist city, it is still a real place. People wave to their friends and stop the traffic to say bonjour. You will find that the narrow old streets are full of life and not just some museum piece.

“Marseille has been changing for as long as I have lived here. What I notice most in recent years is the influx of young people from all over France, creative talents and those looking to try something new by the sea in the sun. They help keep the arts scene fresh and ensure that my favourite bars in Cours Julien always have new faces.

“This new blood helps inspire my art too, which is a mixture of modular furniture and unusual objects. If you are interested, you can get in touch through my website or call to arrange a visit to my studio. I love my city as much as my art, and if I had one piece of advice for any prospective visitor it would be ‘Come! Marseille is waiting for you’.”
