CityCents: Bristol
Local musician Kid Carpet blew €100 in his hometown. Here’s what he bought
1 HOODED SWEATSHIRT
Park Street is Bristol’s fashion centre, and is lined with numerous boutiques, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. I picked up this bargain in the sale at streetwear store Cooshti.
€37.90
2 LOCAL CHEESE
Every Wednesday the vibrant farmers’ market on Corn Street offers an amazing variety of local and traditional foods. This Bath Organic Soft Cheese was there, among an abundance of fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, jams, herbs and spices.
€8.19
3 VINYL
Rooted (9 Gloucester Road) is a great place to shop for records, boasting a brilliant selection and knowledgeable staff. The city became famous for its drum ’n’ bass and triphop in the 1990s, so I asked for the latest Bristol sound.
€7.60
4 VENUE
Venue magazine is the essential guide to what’s on in the Bristol and Bath area. Venue contains all the current local listings, such as cinema, live music and theatre, as well as having editorial features and interviews.
€1.90
5 BOOZE
Pick up a bottle of Harveys Bristol Cream in a traditional Bristol blue glass bottle. It has been bottled in the city since 1796. €9.80 While out and about, enjoy a local tipple, like Gem beer from Bath Ales €2.90, or a Weston’s organic cider.
€2.65
6 BICYCLE HIRE
Bristol has a lot of cycle lanes and routes for two wheels, plus about as many hills as Rome, but don’t let that put you off! Hire a bike for the day and travel wherever your whim takes you. Ask for a “Sustrans” cycle route map.

7 WALL AND PIECE BOOK BY BANKSY
Banksy has come a long way from his Bristol street artist roots. His early works can still be found dotted around the city. I bought this book from the shop at Arnolfini art gallery (16 Narrow Quay).
€16.40
8 OBSERVATORY TRIP
The camera obscura at Litfield Place, Clifton, is a real treat. Like entering a giant pinhole camera, it welcomes you up a spiral staircase, and into a darkened room, where you can take in magical views of the river and suspension bridge.
€2.5
9 FERRY INTO TOWN
Upon arriving at Bristol’s main train station, you could queue for a taxi or bus, or you could catch the ferry. Bristol has numerous waterways, and a boat will take you into town in about 20 minutes, at regular times throughout the day.
€2, WWW.BRISTOLFERRY.COM
10 CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE POSTCARD
Why take your own pictures when the professionals have already done it for you? This Grade I-listed bridge spans the Avon Gorge, and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1830.
