City stay

Maribor is only really now emerging as a tourist destination, so you may not be spoilt for choice with places to stay. However, there are some great options in all categories, whether you are looking for an upmarket business hotel or a budget break in the centre of town
On a budget €
YOUTH HOSTEL, HOTEL UNI
Rooms from €25 per person, per night.
Tel: +386 2250 6700, www.termemb.si

Situated right at the heart of the action, this hostel is great for heading straight out into the old town, and just as good for stumbling back to later on. Rooms are as basic as you’d expect, but are perfectly comfortable, and the friendly staff are happy to help provide information about the city. It feels more like a budget hotel, with singles, doubles and triples. And the bonus is you can splash out in the city’s bars and restaurants with all the money you’ve saved. Extra marks for free internet access.
Cream of the crop €€€
HABAKUK RESORT AND CONVENTION HOTEL
Doubles from €200, including breakfast and spa.
Tel: +386 2300 8100, www.termemb.si

By far the city’s best hotel, the classy 137- room Habakuk reclines at the foot of the Maribor Pohorje, making it ideal for skiers, hikers and those looking for a slice of serious luxury. This five-star hotel boasts all of the usual creature comforts in the spacious bedrooms, and a big plus is the on-site spa. The Slovenes love a bit of spa action, and here they have both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, as well as whirlpools.
Not breaking the bank €€
PIRAMIDA
Doubles from €120, including breakfast.
Tel: +386 2234 4400, www.termemb.si
With its neat, functional rooms and free internet connections, this four-star, 81-room tower hotel may be firmly geared towards the business market, but the central location makes it great for city breaks too. Some of the rooms on the upper floors have views of the city skyline, so try to snare one of these if you can. The restaurant is not a bad option either, on a wet and windy night, and the relaxed café is a favourite among local movers and shakers. Another nice touch is the small spa, where you can enjoy a sauna or steam for a nominal charge. Budding Brad Pitts and George Clooneys might also want to take advantage of the hotel’s offer of free entrance to Maribor Casino.
