Citylives BARCELONA
Ex-pats and locals alike come to this friendly Barcelona bar, set up by a couple of British pals

Former Londoner Kieran loves the changing nature of Barcelona and its chilled out vibe “I’M originally an East End London boy, but I much prefer living in Barcelona. There is real quality of life here, and the pace of living is also definitely slower, which suits me. Although it can take some visitors a bit of time to get used to.

“I moved out here five years ago and set up the Re:publichouse bar with my mate Chris Mason, and it’s now in its second home. It typifies Barcelona, and attracts a mixed crowd of locals, ex-pats and a few tourists, where people just want to enjoy a great night out with no hassles. We have a Nintendo Wii, which is brilliant fun, but the sort of thing that would probably start fights back where I’m from.

“Barcelona is the sort of city that appeals to everyone. My partner Andrea – who I met in the bar just after we opened — is Argentinean, and she loves it, as do my two young children Bryony and Maximiliano. It’s hard not to like a city with so much to see and do, where the beach and mountains are both never far away, too.

“Unlike many cities I have been to, Barcelona is made for walking or, increasingly, cycling around. I like just wandering about soaking up the sights and sounds, and of course the energy. It has been said that Barcelona has the buzz of London in the 1960s and I’d go along with that. The weather is another big plus, with big blue skies the norm.

“One thing that surprises a lot of visitors is how fiercely Catalan Barcelona is. Catalans do feel a breed apart, so don’t make the mistake of calling them Spanish. I think this sense of being different and the search for an independent identity is part of the reason why they are into big projects and groundbreaking architecture. And few people would disagree that it creates spectacular results.

“I have only lived here for five years, but I have seen so many changes, and things continue to evolve. Nothing in Barcelona stands still and that gives the city a real energy that I think is behind the number of repeat visitors. If you come here this year you’ll need to come back in a couple more just to take in all the changes.”
