1 DAPAYK & PADBERG 12”
The latest release from the model/producer duo bemoaning the death of vinyl, Black Beauty is everything German minimal techno has come to be known for; it’s dark, hypnotic, haunting, and more than slightly addictive. We bought this at Dense (34 Oderbergerstrasse). €8.90

2 AMPELMANN ICE CUBE MAKER
Berlin’s little traffic light characters are unlikely city mascots. At the Ampelmann Galerie (5 Hackesche Höfe) in Mitte you can buy everything from T-shirts to gummi bears; we picked up this great little ice tray. €8.90

3 PLATTENBAUTEN CARDS
This funky card game is from Supalife Kiosk in (40 Raumerstrasse) Prenzlauer Berg. The Top Trumps-style game involves prefabricated concrete buildings made in East Berlin, called plattenbauten. English rules and special plattenbau dictionary for confusing German terms are included. €12.50

4 WORK AND PLAY T-SHIRT
We scored this from Cash, a small clothes store at the end of Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse specialising in selling second-hand clothes on a commission basis. This is new though – the drunken letters will make you feel as if you’ve had a few even when you’re sober. €30

5 URBAN ILLUSTRATION BERLIN
The German capital has a lot of graffiti, and this handy guide (with pictures and interviews with the boys and girls behind the paint) points out where to find the best of it. Also from Supalife Kiosk. €24.90

6 LITTLE POLAR BEAR
Berlin’s most recent contender to the city mascot crown is the lovable Knut, a polar bear born in 2005 at the Zoologischer Garten in West Berlin. We also picked up this bag from the Ampelmänn Galerie. €3.50

8 BANG BANG BERLIN
A newly launched bilingual (German and English) fanzine about Berlin’s legendary nightlife. Available at Rotation Records (3 Weinbergsweg). €5
