City Cents Gothenburg
What can you get for €100 (in krona) in Gothenburg? Journalist for local guide Nöjesguiden Sebastian Lundfall took to the streets to find out…
1 Retro Thermos
The area around Linnegatan and Andra Langgatan is not only great for eating and drinking, but also for second-hand shopping. Once known for its porn shops and clubs, it is rapidly changing into a centre for more arty establishments. If you’re lucky, you can get your hands on some real design classics like this Thermos flask. €10
2 Roxette album
If you like browsing through stacks of records you should visit shops like Andra Langgatan’s Skivhandel, or Bengans, on the charming Stigbergstorget square in the Majorna district (the Williamsburg of Gothenburg). At the latter you can enjoy both coffee and live music during store hours. €3. www.bengans.se
3 Film festival tickets
There are loads of cultural events in Gothenburg, like the International Film Festival in January. If it’s music you’re after, visit the Way out West Festival (14–15 August), combining rock, indie, dance and alternative acts with urban comfort. Film Festival ticket, €3.50. Movie ticket, €6
4 Dishcloth
If you’re looking for funny and clever gifts to take back home you’ll definitely find them at DesignTorget, a unique shop with loads of useful stuff you never knew you needed. I bought this dishcloth with a picture of Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on it. Works really well! €4. 14 Vallgatan, www.designtorget.se
5 Earrings
For high fashion and unique design you should visit the area around Magasinsgatan and Vallgatan in the middle of the city centre. I found these nautical-style earrings – Gothenburg is Scandinavia’s largest port – in a small shop named Emma & Malena, after its two owners. €12. www.emmamalena.com
6 Water of life
Aqvavit, or “water of life”, is popular among Swedes, especially during holidays like midsummer (20 June). The drink goes well with pickled herring – but remember, in Sweden you can only buy booze from special “Systembolaget” stores, so plan ahead. €13. www.systembolaget.se
7 Hagabulle
Haga is the old town of Gothenburg and a nice place to grab a coffee and cake. If you want to take a walk on the wild side, you should try a hagabulle at Café Husaren. It’s like a normal cinnamon roll, only as big as your face. Coffee and hagabulle, €5.50. 28 Haga Nygata.
8 Cheap Monday
Swedish fashion used to be either boring or expensive, yet Weekday combines hip design and value for money. Its Cheap Monday jeans are hugely popular, coming in loads of different colours and styles. €9.50. 65 Kungsgatan, www.weekday.se
9 Boat tours
Explore Gothenburg’s beautiful harbour with a guided boat trip. Many of the boats serve beer and the classic Gothenburg seafood sandwich, and you can also take longer tours out around the archipelago. I also picked up this traditional sailing ship as a souvenir! €18. www.stromma.se
10 Design Museum poster
The Rohsska Museum is well worth a visit for anyone interested in fashion, architecture, design or modern history. After taking a look around, also check out their café, which does a pretty affordable lunch. City museums pass €4. Poster €8. 37 Vasagatan, www.designmuseum.se
