Located just across the road from the BMW Headquarters, which is a futuristic-looking enough building as it is, BMW Welt seemed to have been delivered from outer space when it was opened in October 2007. After almost 100 years of building luxury cars, BMW’s presence on Oberwiesenfeld in Munich now gives off the impression of space-age ingenuity and clean, curvaceous design. Created by Viennese architects Coop Himmelb(l)au, the building acts as an extremely elaborate display cabinet for BMW’s latest vehicles, a conference centre and dealership, with four restaurants and a gift shop scattered through the building. With an 800KW solar plant on the roof, BMW Welt is as ecologically sound as it is futuristic-looking.
