FRINGE BENEFITS

Like Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind it’s d time to rip down those curtains and fashion yourself a li’l something with that on-trend fringing. However, if you don’t want to look too upholstered there’s an easier way with a trip to the high street. This season’s trimming is hanging off everything from bodies to bikinis, making close contact with various surfaces likely to get you in a tangle. The idea of an anniversary Glastonbury in these spring threads threatens a multiple human weave – get ready for some fringe theatre!

The trend is a familiar one but this time it moves away from flapper-girl dresses and circus-style jackets to Wild West boho meets retro biker, as swished up and down the catwalk by names like Jasper Conran, Hermès, Balenciaga and McQueen.

The rule of cool here is to be sparing. The silhouette should be graphic, sleek and straightlined – in neutral colours such as black, white, tan or grey. It’s fab on dresses, skirts, leggings and camis, and brave bods could also try cute knickers like the £120 (€141) pair from Wheels & Dollbaby that swished across Lily Cole’s fashionable ass. To look like a Navajo native, go for a tee as demonstrated with maxed-out sex appeal by model Alessandra Ambrosio at the painfully hip Californian music festival Coachella earlier this year.

Fringing is a faux pas on trousers and catsuits, or any showpiece that looks like it will put you centre stage in a knife-throwing act at the big top. As ever, if you’re nervous about a trend, stick to working it through your accessories. Swag bags with a little fringing are swinging with attitude from the shoulders of Mischa Barton (pictured), Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox. Go for something in chocolate, amber or ivory, which will look fab with spring/summer’s utility khakis or tribal-inspired maxi dresses.

As for footwear, there are heaps of fringed sandals to swing at the beach. Wear flat, ankle-highs with a maxi dress or denim boyfriend shorts. Wear knee-highs with utility shorts or structured playsuits. Look out for fringe festivals across Europe this summer!
