PAPASTRATOS
Located on the seafront, this former tobacco warehouse (pictured) has been given a facelift to become the landmark of Volos. Surrounded by neo-classical buildings and looking out over the harbour, Papastratos is now a cultural centre and part of the university. Its terrace is where locals and students come to chill out.

VOLOS PALACE
All the best bits of neo-classical architecture went into the design of this calmly stylish hotel that looks right over the Pagasitic Gulf. Rooms are sumptuous in earthy tones, its business centre is top notch and the restaurant features fresh fl owers and crisp white linens.

GIANNAKOS
What this compact taverna lacks in size it more than makes up for in atmosphere and generous helpings. Start off with the taramasalata dip, followed by kleftiko lamb or keftedes meatballs, or try them all by having a mezedes of 20 or more dishes.
