Gozo's walled city, with its winding streets and historic architecture, was built during the Aragonese period and refortifi ed by the Knights in 1599. Today it houses the island's cathedral, as well as the Folklore Museum and Old Prison. The views from the top are unmissable.

This place (pictured) has become a local institution, with franchises popping up in Malta and overseas. But this is where it all began. Inside is dark and cosy, with knickknacks adorning the walls, and a crowd that tends to spill out onto the piazza.
