Nice: See

HOTEL NEGRESCO
Yes, it's a hotel, but in a sense it's also a museum, being one of the last remaining privately owned palaces in the world. The Negresco is decked out in the most opulent furnishings imaginable (pictured) and acts as a showcase for French art from the Renaissance to the present day. Guests should dress to impress.

MUSEE MATISSE
Check out this important collection of works by the master Fauvist painter in this Genoan style villa (pictured) close to where the artist lived between 1918 and 1954. Spend some time appreciating the gentle hues of Nice and, chances are, you'll leave feeling inspired, too.

MUSEE NATIONAL MARC CHAGALL
A trip to Palestine in the 1930s triggered a spiritual and artistic upheaval in Marc Chagall that resulted in the works in this museum. His “Message Biblique” is a series of 17 magnificent paintings dealing with subjects from the Old Testament.

This photography museum was once the home of L'Artistique, a 19th century culture club frequented by everyone from Camille Saint Saëns to Mata Hari. Until 15 May it will be displaying the portraits and landscapes of August Sander, one of the greats of the 20th century.
