Once known as Gallows Hill, this outpost was Fredrikstad's old fortress and an artillery barracks under Swedish rule in the late 1600s. Today, it's great fun to amble about the intact embankments, stockade and turrets.

Set at the southern tip of Gamblebyen (old town) in an early-18th-century sentry post, this is one of the most compelling museums in the region. The building holds a scale model of the old town as well as a collection of regional ethnographic artefacts spanning several centuries.
