Escape to the charming town of Lucca, about an hour west of Florence, with its dominating 12m-high walls. These make for an ideal passeggiata (evening stroll), but before that, make sure you admire the dazzling artworks in the cathedral.

PALAZZO STROZZI
Catch one of the exhibitions held at art gallery Palazzo Strozzi, a perfectly preserved Renaissance palace with a fantastic inner courtyard. On until 18 July is “A Look into the Invisible”, charting the career of surrealist Giorgio de Chirico.
