BREMEN CHRISTMAS MARKET
Chase the sound of seasonal organ music and aroma of Glühwein through the streets of Bremen's historic Altstadt (pictured). Starting outside the town hall, there are over 170 festive stalls. Until 23 December.

BREMEN MARATHON
Runners looking to feel the slap of tarmac under their feet take note: 4 October sees the return of Bremen's annual marathon. Registration is possible on site, and there's also a half marathon and 10km track if you're feeling short on stamina.

HACHEZ
Cherry tomato salt chocolate? Monstrous, some say... but not Germans. The country's second-largest chocolate producer is renowned for combining unlikely ingredients, but also makes superior pralines and connoisseur chocs.

HELGOLAND
With air as clean as sterilised cutlery and a ban on cars, Helgoland is a unique natural monument far from the hustle and bustle of mainland life. At 70km from the shore it's accessible daily by catamaran.

Kunstsammlung Böttcherstrasse
The Kunstsammlung Böttcherstrasse museum is playing host to a fantastic exhibition until 3 April, celebrating local artist Elisabeth Hausmann.

RHODODENDRON PARK
The tail end of June is the ideal time to stroll through Bremen's Rhododendron Park. With over 1,600 varieties of rhododendron and azaleas, the park is the largest of its kind on the continent.

Spuckstein
Rumoured to be the spot where local serial poisoner Gesche Gottfried met her demise, many of Bremen's inhabitants still show their disgust by spitting on the black stone laid here.
