Venture into the crypt underneath
Bremen's St Peter's Cathedral for a
glimpse of the seriously macabre. Here
you'll find eight mummified bodies
preserved in glass-top coffins, including
an English countess, two Swedish officers
from the 1600s and a local student on the
losing side of a duel.

Bremen's regional delicacy,
favoured by former chancellor Helmut
Kohl, is the haggis of Germany. Pinkel
is a traditional cut of pig's intestine
stuffed with oatmeal, served in sausage
form with a side of kale. You'll find it
on menus throughout the city. Try it at
restaurants such as Ständige Vertretung
on Böttcherstrasse.

Each year thousands of costume-clad and
crazy-masked revellers (pictured) descend

The banks of Bremen's River Weser are set to explode in carnival spirit from 30 June to 4 July, drawing in around 150,000 people for live music, performance art, theatre shows, beer stalls and sausage stands as the annual open-air Breminale festival ushers in summer to the city.
